We should all strive to ensure we don’t make other people’s work lives suck.  That should be one of our guiding principles: when we get out of bed and head off to work each day, we should aim to make sure the people around us have the best day possible!  Whether we commute to the study upstairs or the office 20 miles away, we should be guided by the principle of doing what we can to make other people’s work lives positive experiences.  A good day today might not be devoid of difficult things and challenging issue.  But what it should always be is kind, respectful and creative.

We’re familiar with the saying ‘we can’t change others we can only change ourselves’.  By changing ourselves we can changes how people respond to us.  To make other people work lives full of kindness, respect and creativity, we have to start with ourselves – we have to start with self-awareness.

If you’re a leader, your self-awareness is fundamental to the impact you have on others.  It also determines how you are received and perceived by others and consequently how far your reputation reaches.  If we increase our self-awareness skills, we learn more about the choices we have in how we behave, communicate and lead. With greater understanding of our choices, we increase the control we have on our impact and are better placed to positively impact others and how they respond to us and others.

It’s reciprocal, cyclical and relational! Increasing our own self-awareness positively impacts others and positively impacts ourselves!
